Converting several datasets at once?

One Shapefile per GPX group

mapverter reads waypoints, routes and tracks as separate layers and writes each group that has data as its own Shapefile: waypoints.shp with points, and routes.shp and tracks.shp with lines. Each comes with its .shx, .dbf, .prj and .cpg files in the same ZIP.

Elevation and time

Shapefiles from mapverter are two-dimensional, so elevation is removed and the conversion report tells you how many features had it. GPX values such as name, desc, time, sym and type become text fields in the DBF. The times recorded at each track point are not carried over.

Coordinate system

GPX is always WGS 84, and the Shapefile starts in WGS 84 too. For projected coordinates, pick Web Mercator (EPSG:3857) as the target or start from a coordinate system page that presets another system; the coordinates are converted and the .prj describes the system you use. Text fields are written as UTF-8, or as CP949 if you choose it.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I get several Shapefiles?
A Shapefile holds one geometry type, and a GPX file can mix waypoints with routes and tracks. Each group becomes its own Shapefile so points and lines stay separate.
Is the elevation kept?
No. Elevation is removed because the Shapefiles are written in 2D, and the report counts the affected features. Convert to GeoJSON or KML if you need the elevation values.
Are track timestamps kept?
A waypoint's time is kept as a text field. The individual times recorded at each track point are not carried over.
Is my GPX uploaded?
No. The file is converted in your browser and never sent to a server.
