Waypoints, routes and tracks
mapverter reads a GPX file as up to three layers: waypoints, routes and tracks. When more than one of them has data, the KML gets a folder for each, named waypoints, routes and tracks; a GPX with a single group is written without folders. Waypoints become points, routes and tracks become lines, and a track with several segments becomes a MultiGeometry of lines.
What carries over
- Elevation from
<ele>is kept as the third value of each coordinate. - The GPX name becomes the placemark name. Other values, such as desc, time, sym and type, are stored as ExtendedData.
- The list of times recorded at each track point is not carried over, so the KML holds the path but not its timing.
Coordinates
GPX and KML both use WGS 84 longitude and latitude, so the target coordinate system is locked and coordinates are written as they are. A GPX that is UTF-8 or declares a legacy encoding in its XML header is read correctly, and the KML is written in UTF-8.
