Straight from the archive

Add the .kmz as it is. mapverter opens the ZIP in your browser and reads doc.kml, wherever it is in the archive, or the first .kml file in name order when there is no doc.kml. The KML can be UTF-8 or a legacy encoding declared in its XML header.

What the GeoJSON contains

  • One FeatureCollection with every placemark as a Feature, in WGS 84 longitude and latitude.
  • Name, description and ExtendedData values as properties, and the folder path in a folder property.
  • Style properties such as stroke, stroke-width and fill, taken from the placemark styles.
  • Mixed MultiGeometry as GeometryCollection, placemarks without coordinates as null geometry, and altitude as the third coordinate.

Icons and other files in the KMZ

Image files packed in the KMZ are not extracted. A placemark with a custom icon keeps the icon address in its icon property, which for a packed image is a path inside the archive.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to extract the KMZ first?
No. The archive is opened in your browser and the KML document inside is converted directly.
Are icon images included in the GeoJSON?
No. GeoJSON only holds features and properties. The icon address is kept in the icon property, but the image file itself is not extracted.
Which file in the KMZ is converted?
The document named doc.kml, in any folder of the archive. If there is none, the first .kml file in name order is used.
Is my KMZ uploaded?
No. Nothing leaves your browser during the conversion.
