From archive to plain text
Some tools and scripts only read plain-text KML. mapverter opens the KMZ in your browser, reads doc.kml (or the first .kml in name order when there is no doc.kml) and writes a fresh KML 2.2 file in UTF-8.
What carries over
- Points, lines, polygons and MultiGeometry, with altitude values kept in the coordinates.
- Placemark names, descriptions and ExtendedData values.
- Line color, opacity and width, fill color and opacity, and icon color, scale and address. Shared styles referenced with a styleUrl are written as an inline Style on each placemark.
What changes
- The folder hierarchy is not rebuilt. Each placemark's folder path is kept as a
foldervalue in its ExtendedData. - Altitude values stay in the coordinates, but altitudeMode and extrude settings are not written, so viewers fall back to the default and draw the features on the ground.
- Image files stored inside the KMZ are not extracted. The icon address stays in the style, so icons that lived inside the archive may not appear when the KML is opened on its own.
- Placemarks without geometry are dropped and counted in the conversion report. Style settings the output does not carry, such as label, balloon and list styles, are dropped as well.
