Columns become geometry and fields
mapverter finds the coordinates by column name: lat/latitude with lon/lng/long/longitude, x with y, or a WKT column such as wkt or geometry. Latitude and longitude columns are read as WGS 84. X and Y values that fit longitude and latitude ranges are treated as WGS 84 too; other X and Y values need their coordinate system, which you choose from the offered candidates, by clicking your area on the map to try the local UTM zone, or by searching for an EPSG code or name. If no column is recognized, you pick the columns yourself.
Every other column becomes a DBF field. The coordinate columns are not repeated as attributes, and empty headers get names such as column1.
Numbers, text and names
- A column becomes numeric only when every value is a plain number. Codes with leading zeros, like
00123, and integers too large to store exactly, like 19-digit IDs, stay as text. - Names longer than 10 bytes are shortened and listed in
field_names.csv, and text longer than 254 bytes is cut. - Semicolon-separated files with decimal commas are read correctly.
Geometry and output
Latitude/longitude and X/Y columns give points. A WKT column can also hold lines and polygons; when the types are mixed, each type gets its own Shapefile in the ZIP. Rows without valid coordinates are left out and counted. The Shapefile starts in the source coordinate system; the target list also offers WGS 84 and Web Mercator (EPSG:3857), and coordinate system pages preset others.
