What the KMZ contains

mapverter writes a ZIP archive with one compressed file, doc.kml. Placemarks keep their names, descriptions, ExtendedData values and altitudes, and their line, fill and icon styles are written inline on each placemark. Coordinates stay in WGS 84, the only system KML allows.

Icons, folders and encoding

  • Icons keep the address they had in your KML. Image files on your computer are not added to the archive, so an icon that points to a local file will not travel with the KMZ.
  • The folder hierarchy is flattened. Each placemark keeps its folder path in a folder value in ExtendedData.
  • The source KML can be UTF-8 or a legacy encoding declared in its XML header, such as EUC-KR. The KMZ is always written as UTF-8.

Before you download

Placemarks without geometry are left out and counted in the conversion report. Style settings the output does not carry, such as label, balloon and list styles, are dropped. Altitude values stay in the coordinates, but altitudeMode and extrude settings are not written, so viewers draw the features on the ground.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert KML to KMZ?
A KMZ is compressed, so it is usually smaller than the KML. It is handy when you share placemarks by email or upload them to a service that accepts KMZ.
Are icon images included in the KMZ?
No. The KMZ contains only doc.kml. Icons referenced by a web address keep that address, but icons that point to files on your computer are not packed.
Will my folders still be there?
Not as KML folders. Each placemark keeps its original folder path in an ExtendedData value called folder.
Is my KML uploaded?
No. The KMZ is built entirely in your browser.
