Swiss LV95 coordinates
EPSG:2056 identifies CH1903+ / LV95, a projected coordinate system in metres on the Bessel 1841 ellipsoid. It uses the Swiss oblique Mercator projection. The projection centre is 46° 57′ 8.66″ N, 7° 26′ 22.5″ E (46.9524055555556° N, 7.43958333333333° E), the scale factor is 1, and the centre has easting 2,600,000 m and northing 1,200,000 m. The projection azimuth and rectified grid angle are both 90°.
The definition bundled with mapverter gives an area of use from 5.96° to 10.49° E and 45.82° to 47.81° N, which covers Switzerland and Liechtenstein. As a reference, the point at 8° E, 47° N is about easting 2,642,695 m and northing 1,205,591 m.
Distinguish EPSG:2056 from LV03
LV95 and the older CH1903 / LV03 (EPSG:21781) are different reference frames. For the same place, LV95 eastings are about 2,000,000 m larger and northings about 1,000,000 m larger. Removing the leading millions from LV95 values is not a precise transformation to LV03, because LV03 is distorted by up to 1.6 m.
How mapverter handles EPSG:2056
- A .prj is recognized by its EPSG code or when it matches the ESRI definition bundled with mapverter, CH1903+_LV95. The same projection written in other terms may be read as a custom coordinate system without a datum shift, and the conversion report then warns about it.
- The French, German and Italian interfaces include LV95 in their source candidates and target presets, and the candidate list depends on the input range. The English interface does not suggest it, so search for 2056 by EPSG code in the coordinate system picker and check the result on the map.
- The WGS 84 conversion uses a fixed three-parameter datum shift. It does not perform a local grid correction or a height transformation.
- This page presets EPSG:2056 as the target for SHP and CSV output. KML, KMZ, GeoJSON and GPX always use WGS 84.
