Longitude and latitude in degrees

EPSG:4326 is WGS 84 as a geographic coordinate system. Every position is a longitude and a latitude in degrees on the WGS 84 ellipsoid, which has a semi-major axis of 6,378,137 m and an inverse flattening of 298.257223563. Its area of use is the whole world. There is no projection, so the values are angles rather than distances.

Where mapverter uses EPSG:4326

  • KML, KMZ, GeoJSON and GPX output always uses it, so the target selector is locked for those formats.
  • CSV output starts with it. Point data gets latitude and longitude columns, latitude first, while lines and polygons go in a wkt column.
  • Coordinates converted into WGS 84 are rounded to 7 decimal places, about 1 cm.
  • A file without coordinate system information whose coordinates all fall within ±180° longitude and ±90° latitude is treated as WGS 84, and the conversion report says so. GeoJSON is WGS 84 by definition, so no note is added for it.

Turning projected data into longitude and latitude

Shapefile output normally keeps the source coordinate system. This page presets EPSG:4326 as the target for SHP and CSV, so when you download a Shapefile in EPSG:3857, a UTM zone or a Korean grid such as EPSG:5186 as SHP, it comes out in longitude and latitude with a matching .prj file.

Frequently asked questions

Is EPSG:4326 the same as WGS 84?
EPSG:4326 is the code for WGS 84 longitude and latitude. Projected systems built on WGS 84, such as EPSG:3857 or the UTM zones, have their own codes and use metres.
In what order are longitude and latitude written?
mapverter writes longitude first in GeoJSON and KML coordinates. CSV output is different: when it has latitude and longitude columns, the latitude column comes first. When reading a CSV, columns are found by name, so their order does not matter.
How precise are converted coordinates?
Coordinates converted into longitude and latitude are rounded to 7 decimal places, which is about 1 cm on the ground. Coordinates that are already in WGS 84 are written as they are.
Can I convert WGS 84 data to projected coordinates?
Yes. Choose SHP or CSV and pick a projected target such as EPSG:3857 before downloading, or open the page of another coordinate system to preset it as the target. KML, KMZ, GeoJSON and GPX stay in WGS 84.
