Poland's PUWG 1992 coordinates

EPSG:2180 is named ETRF2000-PL / CS92 in the PROJ database and is commonly called PUWG 1992 or PL-1992. It is a Transverse Mercator projection in metres on the GRS80 ellipsoid. Its central meridian is 19° E, the latitude of origin is 0°, the scale factor is 0.9993, the false easting is 500,000 m and the false northing is −5,300,000 m.

The definition bundled with mapverter gives an area of use from 14.14° to 24.15° E and 49° to 55.93° N. In mapverter's easting-northing order, the point at 19° E, 52° N is about x = 500,000 m and y = 459,309 m.

CS92, CS2000 and axis order

CS2000 has separate zones with their own EPSG codes, 2176 to 2179, and it is not interchangeable with CS92. EPSG:2180 itself lists northing first and easting second, but mapverter uses easting followed by northing, so check files whose x and y labels follow a northing-first convention.

How mapverter handles EPSG:2180

  • A .prj is matched by its EPSG code or by its projection parameters, so ESRI-style names such as ETRF2000-PL_CS92 are recognized as well.
  • Without a .prj, the Polish interface offers EPSG:2180 first among the candidates that fit the data, and its candidates and target presets also include the CS2000 zones. The English interface does not suggest it, so search for 2180 by EPSG code in the coordinate system picker and check the result on the map.
  • In the Polish interface, text that is not valid UTF-8 and comes with no .cpg file or specific DBF language marker is tried as Windows-1250 before Windows-1252.
  • This page presets EPSG:2180 as the target for SHP and CSV output. KML, KMZ, GeoJSON and GPX always use WGS 84.

Frequently asked questions

Is EPSG:2180 the same as PUWG 1992?
Yes. PUWG 1992, also written PL-1992 or CS92, is the projected coordinate system that EPSG:2180 identifies.
Does CS2000 use the same code?
No. Its zones use other EPSG codes and different false eastings. Check the zone stated by the data provider.
Why do Polish letters look wrong?
An older DBF may use Windows-1250. mapverter reads it that way when the .cpg file or the DBF header says so, and the Polish interface also tries Windows-1250 first when nothing else is known. Check the detected encoding and preview the attributes; a coordinate-system change cannot repair text encoding.
Can I keep EPSG:2180 in KML?
No. KML requires WGS 84 longitude and latitude. Choose SHP or CSV to keep EPSG:2180 coordinates.
