ETRS89 / UTM zone 32N

EPSG:25832 is ETRS89 / UTM zone 32N, a Transverse Mercator projection in metres on the GRS80 ellipsoid of the ETRS89 reference system. Its central meridian is 9° E, the latitude of origin is 0°, the scale factor is 0.9996, the false easting is 500,000 m and the false northing is 0 m.

The definition bundled with mapverter gives an area of use from 6° to 12.01° E and 36.53° to 84.01° N. On the central meridian x is exactly 500,000 m: the point at 9° E, 50° N, for example, is x = 500,000 m and y = 5,538,631 m.

Zones, datums and zone prefixes

German datasets may use this CRS, UTM zone 33N (EPSG:25833) or older DHDN / Gauss-Krüger systems. Some also prefix the easting with the zone number, so that 500,000 becomes 32,500,000. Such values do not follow the ordinary EPSG:25832 definition. They belong to a variant, ETRS89 / UTM zone 32N (zE-N), EPSG:4647.

How mapverter handles EPSG:25832

  • A .prj is recognized by its EPSG code or when it matches the ESRI definition bundled with mapverter, ETRS_1989_UTM_Zone_32N.
  • Without a .prj, the German interface offers EPSG:25832 first among the candidates that fit the data and lists it among its target presets. The English interface does not suggest it, so search for 25832 by EPSG code in the coordinate system picker and check the result on the map.
  • This page presets EPSG:25832 as the target for SHP and CSV output. KML, KMZ, GeoJSON and GPX always use WGS 84.
  • The conversion does not model plate motion or coordinate epochs.

Frequently asked questions

Is EPSG:25832 identical to WGS 84 / UTM 32N?
No. WGS 84 / UTM 32N is EPSG:32632. The zone parameters are the same, but the reference systems differ.
How do I tell EPSG:25832 and EPSG:25833 apart?
Check the source metadata. Easting and northing ranges alone may fit both zones, so also verify the location on the map.
Does a zone prefix belong in the easting?
Not in the standard EPSG:25832 definition. If the source includes a prefix, such as an eight-digit easting starting with 32, check its actual coordinate system, for example EPSG:4647, before assigning this code.
Can I keep EPSG:25832 in KML?
No. KML uses WGS 84 longitude and latitude. Choose SHP or CSV to keep UTM metre coordinates.
