Korea's Central Belt 2010

EPSG:5186 identifies KGD2002 / Central Belt 2010, a Transverse Mercator projection in metres on the GRS80 ellipsoid of the Korea Geodetic Datum 2002. Its central meridian is 127° E, the latitude of origin is 38° N, the scale factor is 1, the false easting is 200,000 m and the false northing is 600,000 m.

The definition bundled with mapverter gives an area of use from 126° to 128° E and 33.14° to 38.33° N. As a reference, the point at 127° E, 37.5° N is about x = 200,000 m and y = 544,504 m.

Distinguish EPSG:5186 from EPSG:5181

EPSG:5181 uses the same central meridian and false easting, but a false northing of 500,000 m. Assigning the wrong code shifts the data by about 100 km north or south. The other 2010 belts, EPSG:5185, EPSG:5187 and EPSG:5188, share the same false values and differ only in central meridian (125°, 129° and 131° E). A neighbouring belt moves data about 180 km east or west, and EPSG:5188, two belts away, about 350 km.

How mapverter handles EPSG:5186

  • A .prj is matched by its EPSG code or by its projection parameters, so ESRI-style names such as Korea_2000_Korea_Central_Belt_2010 are recognized as well.
  • Without a .prj, the Korean interface offers EPSG:5186 first among the candidates that fit the data.
  • This page presets EPSG:5186 as the target for SHP and CSV output. KML, KMZ, GeoJSON and GPX always use WGS 84.

Frequently asked questions

Are EPSG:5186 coordinates longitude and latitude?
No. They are projected coordinates in metres. WGS 84 longitude and latitude use degrees.
Can I save EPSG:5186 coordinates in KML?
KML requires WGS 84 longitude and latitude, so mapverter converts the coordinates to WGS 84 when exporting KML. Choose SHP or CSV to keep projected output.
What if my Shapefile has no .prj file?
mapverter suggests candidate coordinate systems and draws the data with each one, so you can see which puts it in place. A matching number range alone does not prove that the source is EPSG:5186, so check the data documentation or ask the provider when in doubt.
How do I tell EPSG:5186 and EPSG:5181 apart?
Compare the y values. For the same place, EPSG:5186 values are 100,000 m larger than EPSG:5181 values because of the different false northing.
