SIRGAS 2000 longitude and latitude

EPSG:4674 is SIRGAS 2000 as a two-dimensional geographic coordinate system. Every position is a longitude and a latitude in degrees on the GRS80 ellipsoid, which has a semi-major axis of 6,378,137 m and an inverse flattening of 298.257222101. There is no projection, so the values are angles rather than UTM metres.

The definition bundled with mapverter gives an area of use from 122.19° to 25.28° W and 59.87° S to 32.72° N. In mapverter, coordinate pairs use longitude first and latitude second, although the EPSG definition lists latitude first. CSV output is the exception: point data is written in latitude and longitude columns, latitude first.

Distinguish EPSG:4674 from WGS 84 and UTM

A degree-like coordinate range cannot distinguish SIRGAS 2000 from WGS 84. For projected Brazilian data, choose the correct zone, such as SIRGAS 2000 / UTM 23S.

How mapverter handles EPSG:4674

  • A .prj is recognized by its EPSG code or when it matches the ESRI definition bundled with mapverter, GCS_SIRGAS_2000.
  • The Portuguese interface lists EPSG:4674 among its target presets. This page presets EPSG:4674 as the target for SHP and CSV output. KML, KMZ, GeoJSON and GPX always use WGS 84.
  • A file without coordinate system information whose coordinates all fall within ±180° longitude and ±90° latitude is treated as WGS 84, and the conversion report says so. GeoJSON is WGS 84 by definition, so no note is added for it. If the source is SIRGAS 2000, change the coordinate system to EPSG:4674 yourself.
  • The bundled WGS 84 transformation does not apply coordinate-epoch or plate-motion corrections.

Frequently asked questions

Is EPSG:4674 a UTM coordinate system?
No. It is geographic and uses degrees. A UTM CRS includes a zone and projected metre coordinates.
Is SIRGAS 2000 identical to WGS 84?
They are distinct reference systems. mapverter converts between them without changing the angles, which EPSG lists with an accuracy of about 1 m. Equal angular values do not make their precise realizations and epochs identical.
In what order does CSV output write EPSG:4674 coordinates?
Point data gets latitude and longitude columns, latitude first, while lines and polygons go in a wkt column that lists longitude first. When mapverter reads a CSV, it finds the columns by name, so their order does not matter. If you choose the columns yourself, pick the longitude column as Longitude or X and the latitude column as Latitude or Y.
Can I keep EPSG:4674 in KML?
No. KML is always WGS 84 longitude and latitude, so the SIRGAS 2000 label is not kept. Choose SHP or CSV to keep EPSG:4674 coordinates.
