simplestyle becomes KML style

If your features carry simplestyle properties, mapverter writes them as an inline Style on each placemark:

  • stroke, stroke-opacity and stroke-width become the line color and width.
  • fill and fill-opacity become the polygon fill color.
  • marker-color becomes the icon color.

Properties without a KML equivalent in mapverter's output, such as marker-symbol and marker-size, are dropped and counted in the conversion report.

Properties and descriptions

A name property becomes the placemark name and description becomes its description. Every other property is written as ExtendedData; nested objects and arrays are stored as JSON text, and null values are skipped.

Coordinates and geometry

KML uses WGS 84, so the target coordinate system is locked. Older GeoJSON files that declare another system in a crs member, such as EPSG:5186, are converted to WGS 84 when mapverter knows that system. GeometryCollections are written as MultiGeometry, altitude values are kept, and features with a null geometry are left out and counted.

Frequently asked questions

Will my GeoJSON colors show up in Google Earth?
The simplestyle colors and line widths are written as KML LineStyle, PolyStyle and IconStyle elements, which Google Earth reads. Features without style properties get no Style, so the viewer's defaults apply.
Why are some features missing from the KML?
Features with a null geometry are left out. The conversion report tells you how many were skipped.
What happens to nested properties?
Objects and arrays are written as JSON text inside ExtendedData, so the values are kept even though KML has no nested data type.
Is my GeoJSON uploaded?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser.
