Korean 1985 with a 127° central meridian

EPSG:2097, Korean 1985 / Central Belt, is a Transverse Mercator projection in metres on the Bessel 1841 ellipsoid of the Korean 1985 datum. Its central meridian is exactly 127° E, the latitude of origin is 38° N, the scale factor is 1, the false easting is 200,000 m and the false northing is 500,000 m. The bundled area of use is 126° to 128° E and 33.96° to 38.33° N, and the point at 127° E, 37.5° N is about x = 200,186 m and y = 444,199 m.

Datum shift included

Because Korean 1985 is a different datum from WGS 84 and KGD2002, every conversion of EPSG:2097 data includes a datum transformation. mapverter uses a seven-parameter shift that matches PROJ's default transformation for Korean 1985 within 0.3 mm. Software that uses another transformation method can give results up to a few metres apart.

An ESRI-style Korean 1985 .prj has no datum shift of its own, so using it as it is would put the data about 360 m off. mapverter recognizes it and switches to its bundled definition, which includes the shift.

Telling it apart

  • EPSG:5174 shares the datum and false values but moves the central meridian 10.405″ east. Mixing them up shifts data about 250 to 270 m east or west.
  • EPSG:5181 has the same false values on KGD2002. Reading one as the other moves data about 360 m.

Without a .prj, EPSG:2097 comes late in the candidate order and may not be among the systems offered. Search for 2097 by code to choose it. This page presets EPSG:2097 as the target for SHP and CSV output.

Frequently asked questions

How is EPSG:2097 different from EPSG:5174?
Both use the Korean 1985 datum on the Bessel ellipsoid with a false easting of 200,000 m and a false northing of 500,000 m. Only the central meridian differs: exactly 127° E for EPSG:2097 and 127° 0′ 10.405″ E for EPSG:5174.
Why is EPSG:2097 missing from the suggested candidates?
mapverter shows up to six candidates, and EPSG:2097 is checked late. Search for 2097 by EPSG code or name in the coordinate system picker to select it.
Will my converted coordinates match other software exactly?
Not always. The datum transformation can be done in different ways, and results may differ by up to a few metres between methods.
