Bessel ellipsoid and a shifted central meridian

EPSG:5174, Korean 1985 / Modified Central Belt, is a Transverse Mercator projection in metres on the Bessel 1841 ellipsoid of the Korean 1985 datum. Its central meridian is 127.002890277778° E, that is 127° 0′ 10.405″ E, slightly east of 127°. The latitude of origin is 38° N, the scale factor is 1, the false easting is 200,000 m and the false northing is 500,000 m. The bundled area of use is 126° to 128° E and 33.96° to 38.33° N.

A datum shift is part of every conversion

The Korean 1985 datum is not the same as WGS 84 or KGD2002, so converting EPSG:5174 data always includes a datum transformation. mapverter's definition uses a seven-parameter shift that matches PROJ's default transformation for Korean 1985 to within 0.3 mm. Other software may use a different transformation method, and results can differ by up to a few metres.

An ESRI-style .prj for Korean 1985 has no datum shift, and using it as it is would put the data about 360 m off. When mapverter recognizes such a .prj, it uses its bundled definition with the shift instead.

Similar-looking systems

  • EPSG:2097 uses the same datum and false values, but its central meridian is exactly 127° E. Mixing the two up moves data about 250 to 270 m east or west.
  • EPSG:5181 has the same false values on the KGD2002 datum. Confusing it with EPSG:5174 moves data about 315 m.

For reference, the point at 127° E, 37.5° N is about x = 199,930 m and y = 444,199 m in EPSG:5174. This page presets EPSG:5174 as the target for SHP and CSV output.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my result differ slightly from another program?
Converting EPSG:5174 involves a datum transformation, and programs may use different methods for it. mapverter's shift matches PROJ's default transformation within 0.3 mm, but other methods can give results up to a few metres apart.
What is the difference between EPSG:5174 and EPSG:2097?
Both use the Korean 1985 datum and the same false easting and northing. EPSG:5174 puts the central meridian at 127° 0′ 10.405″ E and EPSG:2097 at exactly 127° E, so the same coordinates land about 250 to 270 m apart.
Can I convert EPSG:5174 data to EPSG:5186?
Yes. Open the EPSG:5186 page, which presets that target, add the file with its .prj and download SHP or CSV. The datum shift is applied automatically.
