Lambert-93 coordinates in France

EPSG:2154 is RGF93 v1 / Lambert-93, a Lambert conformal conic projection in metres on the GRS80 ellipsoid. It is used for mainland France and Corsica. Its central meridian is 3° E, the latitude of origin is 46.5° N, the standard parallels are 49° N and 44° N, the false easting is 700,000 m and the false northing is 6,600,000 m.

The definition bundled with mapverter gives an area of use from 9.86° W to 10.38° E and 41.15° to 51.56° N. This is a bounding rectangle, not a test that a particular dataset belongs to Lambert-93. As a reference, the point at 2° E, 47° N is about x = 624,016 m and y = 6,656,012 m.

Distinguish EPSG:2154 from older French systems

Do not confuse EPSG:2154 with the older NTF Lambert systems, such as Lambert II étendu (EPSG:27572), or with the nine conic conformal CC zones, CC42 to CC50 (EPSG:3942 to 3950). They have different parameters, and the NTF systems also use a different datum.

How mapverter handles EPSG:2154

  • A .prj is matched by its EPSG code or by its projection parameters, so ESRI-style names such as RGF_1993_Lambert_93 are recognized as well.
  • Without a .prj, the French interface offers EPSG:2154 first among the candidates that fit the data. The English interface does not suggest it, so search for 2154 by EPSG code in the coordinate system picker and check the result on the map.
  • This page presets EPSG:2154 as the target for SHP and CSV output. KML, KMZ, GeoJSON and GPX always use WGS 84.

Frequently asked questions

Are EPSG:2154 coordinates longitude and latitude?
No. They are projected coordinates in metres. WGS 84 longitude and latitude use degrees.
Is Lambert-93 the same as Lambert II étendu?
No. Lambert II étendu uses the older NTF datum. Assigning EPSG:2154 to NTF coordinates only relabels them without converting them, so the data lands in the wrong place.
What if my Shapefile has no .prj file?
Check its documentation and compare the proposed coordinate systems on the map. A plausible range cannot prove the source CRS.
Can I keep EPSG:2154 in KML?
No. KML uses WGS 84 longitude and latitude. Choose SHP or CSV to keep EPSG:2154 coordinates.
