The East Sea Belt of the 2010 series

EPSG:5188 is KGD2002 / East Sea Belt 2010, a Transverse Mercator projection in metres on the GRS80 ellipsoid. Its central meridian is 131° E, the latitude of origin is 38° N, the scale factor is 1, the false easting is 200,000 m and the false northing is 600,000 m.

Its area of use is small: the bundled definition covers 130.71° to 131.01° E and 37.39° to 37.62° N. The point at 130.9° E, 37.5° N is about x = 191,157 m and y = 544,509 m.

Same false values as the other belts

EPSG:5185, EPSG:5186, EPSG:5187 and EPSG:5188 differ only in central meridian, so their coordinates look alike. Data in EPSG:5188 that is read as EPSG:5187 lands about 180 km west of where it belongs. If your data sits in the sea or on the wrong coast after conversion, check the belt first.

How mapverter handles EPSG:5188

  • A .prj is matched by its EPSG code or by its projection parameters.
  • Without a .prj, the Korean interface lists EPSG:5188 as the last of up to six candidates for data in its area: at 130.9° E, 37.5° N it shows EPSG:5186, 5174, 5181, 5185, 5187 and 5188. The English interface fills its six places with EPSG:3857, 5186, 5181, 5174, 5185 and 5187, so search for 5188 by code there and check the result on the map.
  • This page presets EPSG:5188 as the target for SHP and CSV output. KML, KMZ, GeoJSON and GPX always use WGS 84.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the area of use so small?
That is the range given in the definition bundled with mapverter: 130.71° to 131.01° E and 37.39° to 37.62° N. Data far outside it is unlikely to be in EPSG:5188.
My EPSG:5188 data appears about 180 km west. What happened?
It was probably read as EPSG:5187, whose central meridian is 2° further west. Assign EPSG:5188 as the source coordinate system and convert again.
Can I export EPSG:5188 coordinates to CSV?
Yes. Choose CSV and keep EPSG:5188 as the target. Point data is written with x and y columns in metres.
